Don’t worry – you can get vegan chocolate, as well as vegan ice cream, vegan mayonnaise, vegan sausages, vegan yoghurt, vegan haggis… Just pop into your local health food shop – you’ll be amazed by the wide array of delicious foods and luxurious toiletries and cosmetics. If you spot something you fancy online in your Animal Free Shopper and it’s not on the shelves just ask the shopkeeper if they can order it in for you – they’re usually more than happy to oblige. Some supermarkets also have a wide range of well labelled items.

Our personal favourite chocolate is the Vegan Organica range which boasts vegan (rice) MILK chocolate (Which taste a bit like Galaxy choc) and vegan white chocolate with real vanilla pod!!!!!

Soya and other plant-based milks are available in all major supermarkets and local health food shops. They come in a range of brands and flavours, so just experiment until you find the one you like best. Plant milk can be used on its own, on cereal, in cooking and in hot drinks. The acidity of coffee can make soya milk curdle, so if you’re partial to a café latte we recommend pouring loads of soya milk in very quickly – this can take a bit of practice!

Some of the more popular brands include Alpro Soya and Provamel although most supermarket chains have their own Organic versions now.

Taken from “Why Vegan?” a leaflet from the Vegan Society.

Not true.

Unless of course you can come to the natural conclusion that by working and paying taxes you are in full support of the war in Iraq and the development of a nuclear deterrent and GM Crops.

Animal rights activists have no say in what is and isn’t tested on animals. There are companies who are given grants to test soya products, natural homeopathic therapies, vitamins, water, oxygen and various other things on animals.

Obviously where avoidable most animal rights activists will avoid animal tested products e.g. Make up products, household cleaners, detergents and general pharmaceuticals and will always seek cruelty free alternatives where possible.

Just because a product or treatment is tested on animals does not mean that the product came about because of the animal testing. The animal tests are there as an insurance policy for when someone displays horrific side effects from use the company can say “Well we tested it on rats and dogs?”.

We will attempt to cover more of the issues surrounding animal tests in future posts but if you do have any questions please ask away!

This is a new one to us here, I’ve asked a few activists if they had heard this question before and I struggled to find one. Seriously though, it is true some activists are unemployed – some through choice, some through illness and some are “in between jobs”.

Most however are employed in various professions including, teachers, doctors, lawyers and various other “upstanding” positions within our society not to mention many working in service industries and other sectors. These people might also not fit into the various stereotypes of a skinny white student with dreadlocks and a body odour problem that can usually be found tunneling under a proposed bypass in the countryside.

Some activists are unemployed through choice because they don’t wish to be a part of a system which uses public taxes to fund the very exploitation they are fighting hard to stop. Some don’t wish to work in jobs which force them to make decisions which compromise their ethical integrity.

Many activists use all their spare time working to stop the exploitation of animals, humans or the environment. The same sort of people were suffragettes, fought for the abolition of the slave trade and brought about massive change which we sometimes take for granted but benefit from on a daily basis.

The government are delighted however whenever the general public make such statements about the protest movement as it shows an underlying apathy which in turn, allows them to make new legislation which takes away our fundamental right to live as free people in our own country.

First they came for the Communists,
- but I was not a communist so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists,
- but I was neither, so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Jews,
- but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.
- Pastor Martin Niemöller

This question covers such a broad spectrum of foods we have put our contact number at the bottom for personalised advice.

We eat anything which is not derived from the exploitation of animals, however we do have many fantastic animal free substitutes for meats, dairy products and eggs some of which include.

The Redwoods range of all vegan products which includes, dairy free: cheddar cheese, mozzarella, (new) feta style and lots more cheeses. Meat free: mince, sausages, bacon, chicken pieces (our favourite), chicken nuggets, scampi, fish fingers, fish pate, chorizo, ham, beef, gravy and the list goes on here.

The Frys range of vegetarian (and 100% vegan) products include: Spicy Burgers, Sausages, Polony, Schnizels, Chunky Strips, Mince and various other amazing meat substitutes.

Obvious the above are just for those of you wishing to know how to replace animal products for vegan versions which can be the best way to become a vegan. Frys and Redwoods products are all very healthy and contain no artery clogging fats that are associated with animal fats.

You will find these products in most towns and cities in the UK usually in your local health food shop or food co-operative.

Obviously going vegan is a great opportunity to eat loads more fruit and vegetables as well as the meat substitutes why not try something you have never tried before and experiment with new herbs and spices.

The fact is, our teeth can bite through flesh, this week know, however our teeth and system cannot handle the hide of animal, real omnivorous animals will eat the hair skin and flesh of the animal killed. If it were possible for us chase a fleeing animal and then take the animal down and bite through the skin to the flesh with tools then we might be a more natural omnivore.

What is natural though, some people might say that the fact that we developed tools and systems to kill bacteria from meat (e.g. cooking) that this is in fact our natural progression as human animals. I agree. However just because we make it possible does not make it right, therefore our teeth were no more designed to eat meat than our hands designed to choke our neighbors or hold the gun which murders our fellow human.

Simply put. We don’t know if our bodies are designed to consume meat. One thing is sure, that is, meat causes more health problems, cancers, diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease than a vegan diet by a long shot.

I’m not sure why this is asked so often, how the hell can someone who eats animals need to see them in the field first or stand at a gate with the kids giving out an “Ahhh” when the calves become curious or want to eat grass from your hand. Surely anyone who wants to toy with or watch a creature which is soon to be killed is slightly weird if they are about to be complicit in that murder?

Its weird, I have pondered upon the question of where I would like to be born into a live of misery or not born at all. I cant say I have come to a conclusion – although I think I am leaning towards the latter choice.

If you think its nice to see cute animals and then turn your back and shout “LA LA LA LA” at the top of your voice as not to hear them be milked or slashed to death in a farm then you are kidding only yourselves.

There is a lot of evidence which says many farm animals (sheep especially) could live in the wild without our influence as deer do currently. I’m not sure if cows might be able to live a wild existence after many years of poor husbandry, they are a grazing animal not that dissimilar to the wild American Bison so who knows.

Just as Christians don’t all want to be judged by the actions of George W Bush, animal rights activists don’t want to be judged by the actions of a very small group within people of their overall movement. These actions have been used to slander the entire movement which comprises of 100,000s of people throughout the world. The vast majority of activists stay within the law and protest peacefully.

Let’s deal with the “grave-digging”. The mainstream media would have you believe that the “culprits” were placed behind bars for this most heinous of crimes, the fact remains that no-one has taken responsibility for the grave digging. Johnny Ablewhite has reiterated this in letters from prison in which he is serving a 12 year sentence for blackmail that he has not admitted and also has not been charged with grave robbery. Even if the animal rights movement were caught red handed this family had been sending tens of thousands of guinea pigs to their torturous deaths at vivisection laboratories such as Huntingdon Life Sciences for years. They had made it absolutely clear that no amount of peaceful, legal protest was going to help those guinea pigs and so more radical action was taken. This action alone, digging up the dead mother of one of the owners, lead to the closure of the farm and has certainly saved the lives of countless thousands of animals. When TESCO move the remains of loved ones to build on cemeteries to (this has happened) make way for another Supermarket or when the British, have permanently robbed the graves of Egyptian Princes for example, nothing is said. Say what you like about the actions, the motives were good and lives were saved.

When it comes to bombings / fires / vandalism (essentially damage to inanimate objects) some believe this is an acceptable form of protest against people or companies who make money in an animal abuse industry. The founders of the ALF (which is no longer an organisation, more-so a state of mind) made it clear that the aim of any ALF action was to cause financial damage without injury to any animal, human or non-human. This could mean liberating animals, or burning a building down.

Alan

We sneak meaty sausages when omnivores arent looking – That was my sense of “humour” answering a question that vegans get asked more than any other question in the world!

Seriously though, (breaths in……………..) The foods which commonly supply the most protein in a vegan diet are pulses (peas, beans, lentils, soya products), grains (wheat, oats, rice, barley, buckwheat, millet, pasta, bread), nuts (brazils, hazels, almonds, cashews) and seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, sesame).

If you are like me though and dont want to sit nibbling nuts seeds and lentils with your impressed face on faking a smile to your healthy vegan friends you could just tuck into… Vegan sausages, Nuggets, Mince, Cheese, Burgers and various other Fake Meats which are quite frankly amazing!

The fact is, eating a varied vegan diet you cannot go wrong with protein, just make sure you are eating your recommended calorie intake each day with various foods from the above recommendations and you will live a happy healthy life!

It is a very common belief that Hitler was a vegetarian. First off before I blast the reality canon into the “Hitler was a veggie” question. We should address the reason why people might want to associate the non consumption of meat as a genocidal manifestation of a psychopath. The simple reason is: a lot of meat eaters look for a reason not to take vegetarianism and for that fact veganism seriously as it implicates that they continue to do something morally wrong.

Now onto the hard facts:

Hitler was advised by his doctors that he should cut out meat due to his health and tendency to sweat profusely and let rip during speeches (seriously). But the reality is he is a vegetarian if a veggie is someone who eat meat quite occasionally.

Here are a few more facts, Hitler wore clothing, Hitler liked the countryside, Hitler had a “pet” dog – Surely these criteria fit the profile of a weekend genocider. Lets say for argument sake he was a vegetarian, So what? For every vegetarian mass murder 99.9999999999999% of other Psychopaths, Genocidal maniacs and murders eat meat.

I wont go into the fact that Vegetarian Society members in Nazi Germany were thrown into concentration camps for their radical views (even if they were in-line with Hitler?).

Thanks
